Our Environmental Policy Environmental Initiatives for Campervans and Motorhomes KEA Campers believes in being a sustainable and environmentally-responsible company. Our sustainability strategy is to be leading the industry in this area: Since our company was founded in 1995, KEA has been at the forefront of good environmental practice with self-containment initiatives in our manufacturing process. In 2006 we identified the importance of this issue and have worked hard to measure and improve our operations from an environmental perspective. Our position of "best in category" has also been a driving force in striving to be a leader for sustainable environmental practises. Our achievements to date include: - Qualmark Enviro Gold rating - first and only campervan and motorhome company in NZ to have this certification.
- Fully self-contained campervans and motorhomes - in accordance with the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA)'s Leave No Trace scheme, and the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) for our shower and toilet models.
- Dump station sponsorship - sponsorship of the CMCA dump station scheme (Australia) since 2004, and the NZMCA dump station programme (NZ) since 2002, to encourage responsible camping and help protect the environment.
- Euro 4 turbo-diesel vehicles - all KEA campervans and motorhomes are manufactured using these diesel vehicles which are considerably more efficient than petrol. Vehicles stay on our rental fleet for a maximum of 30 months.
- Solar panels - all KEA motorhomes and campervans feature solar panels to reduce electricity used, by providing additional charge to the in-house batteries.
- Water filters - water filters are included in all motorhomes and campervans to reduce the need for purchasing bottled water (estimated to save at least 300,000 plastic drink bottles per year collectively in Australia and New Zealand).
- Sustainably sourced plywood with alkorcell coating - all KEA vehicles are manufactured using environmentally-friendly alkorcell-coated and sustainably sourced plywood to reduce the weight of campers (minimising fuel use), as well as reduce deforestation and use of harmful toxins.
- Kea sponsorship - KEA sponsors the native Kea bird enclosure at Rainbow Springs in Rotorua, New Zealand, to help provide awareness of the endangered NZ alpine parrot.
- Biodiesel - in Auckland, NZ, our main transfer coach has used 100% biodiesel since October 2001, as part of a project to introduce biodiesel into our rental fleet.
- Fibreglass recycling plant - KEA is a partner in New Zealand's first and only plant of this kind.
- Measuring our carbon footprint - we are CEMARS certified and audited - allowing us to understand our overall emissions and monitor and implement positive changes.
- Offsetting corporate emissions - by purchasing carbon credits earned by a New Zealand wind farm since July 2008 (carboNZero certified and audited).
- Wind tunnel testing - on vehicle designs to reduce aerodynamic drag.
- KEA reusable shopping bag - provided to rental customers on pick up to reduce use of plastic shopping bags.
- Water recycling system - in our vehicle wash bay in Auckland, New Zealand.
- Recycling - bins provided for customers at depots in New Zealand. Paper, brochures, glass, batteries, plastic and oil are all recycled. Recycling and re-use of returned brochures.
- Eco label and long lasting quality products - used to stock vehicles in New Zealand to introduce our clients to eco products and reduce waste.
- Responsible disposal - of tyres, oil filters and office computers.
- Providing jobs locally - by manufacturing motorhomes and campervans in Auckland, New Zealand, and assembling campervans in Sydney, Australia.
